Chiesa di Santa Caterina - Sciacca

On the inner facade of the church, above the door, there is a Latin inscription showing that a church dedicated to S. Caterina had already been built in 1109 by Countess Giulietta, near Porta S. Pietro.

A second church of S. Caterina was built in 1520 , while the current one was begun in 1796 and completed in 1838-39 , based on a design by the Saccense architect Salvatore Gravanti and resulting from the extension of the second church, from which it includes the parsonage, part of the wall and the facade, of which a round arch can be seen.

The lime-plastered facade is bordered on the sides by robust corners in visible shell tuff and has a high portal with a curved facade in the middle surmounted by a balcony and at the top a picturesque loggia and a bell tower in a sober style . Baroque style.

The interior has one nave and of the five original altars, only the marble main altar remains today with a golden wooden statue of St. Catherine. Noteworthy are some paintings by Gaspare Testone and two marble statues by an unknown artist.
