The Church of Carmine is one of the oldest churches in Sciacca , dating from the Norman period and dedicated to San Salvatore. The Church of the Savior was founded in the 11th century by the Grand Count Ruggero, and was rebuilt and extended in 1579 .
This second church was then incorporated into the current Church of Carmine, built towards the end of the 18th century and opened for worship in 1817.
The entire facade, which remained unfinished, was built with small white tuff stones from the original Church of the Savior, incorporated into the new neoclassical style facade, which was built with blocks of local gold-colored stone. The malicate dome dates from the 19th century and is impressive . All that remains of the second church is a dome with valuable frescoes , which is not visible from the outside and corresponds to the current chapel dedicated to S. Maria di Monte Carmelo . The rose window is an addition from the Gothic period.
The current interior of the church, with a basilica plan, is divided into three naves by four columns and contains works by Giuseppe Sabella and Tommaso Rossi and by Blasco, as well as a valuable imitation of Raphael's Transfiguration.
