The church was originally small in size, but was rebuilt in 1632 and then renovated in 1807.
Inside, with a single nave with five chapels on each side, the main altar and decorations made in 1856-57 based on a design by Salvatore Gravanti are notable. In the apse was the painting depicting the Spasimo of Sicily , a copy of Raphael, executed by Antonello Crescenzio. Between 1856 and 1857 the church was embellished with rococo style decorations , based on designs by Salvatore Gravanti.
The interior of the church appears in the film Sedotta e Abandonata, directed by Pietro Germi.
For several years now, the building has housed a department of the Court of Assizes of Agrigento . Where Holy Mass was once celebrated, important criminal trials are now held periodically.
