Description by the author

This is a city walk within the historic center of Alcamo with its narrow streets , many old churches and historic buildings.

You can park cheaply at Piazza Bagolino (0.20 €/hour 2023), the starting point of the walk.

Through the Porta Palermo we walk via the Corso VI Aprile to the center. But first a detour past some of the many churches in Alcamo. This brings us to the Piazza della Republica , previously a parade ground for military exercises and in the recent past a football field.

A little further away is the imposing Castle of the Counts of Modica, where Emperor Charles V once stayed. Past the Theater Cielo and the Fausto Museum for musical instruments we arrive at the beautiful square Piazza Ciullo , including the former Jesuit monastery and town hall .

We will pass here again soon, but we will once again turn onto Corso VI Aprile to pass the impressive Chiesa Ss. Apostoli Paolo E Bartolomeo a long walk until we reach the edge of the city center. Here are the old church and monastery of the Capuchin Fathers, the abandoned old mother church of the Dominican Fathers. Along an old cobblestone road we reach the Chiessa Madonna dei Miracoli, the patron saint of the city, which is celebrated with numerous festivities from June 19 to 21.

We return to the center of the city past an Arabic fountain , the Palace and the De Ballis tower, churches and chapels until we arrive back at Piazza Ciullo .

We take Corso VI Aprile again and pass the current mother church, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with 17 chapels. Noteworthy is the Monument to the Fallen in the Great War, which was designed according to Mussolini's instructions.

We walk past a number of churches, but the most remarkable is the Chiesa di San Tommaso , the only church that is still original from before the 1600s and was not rebuilt around 1800.

This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours that depart from Balestrate and Sambucco di Sicilia and are described in

"Discover all the sights of western Sicily through day trips"
