Monte Baldo undoubtedly belongs to that latter category.

Towering high above the eastern shores of Lake Garda, this legendary mountain dominates the horizon from afar. Wherever you are around the lake, your gaze is almost instinctively drawn upwards to the rugged limestone cliffs and the rolling alpine ridges. From below, it looks impressive.

From the saddle, it is simply unforgettable.

At 92.6 kilometers, this is not the longest ride around Lake Garda. But with nearly 1,900 meters of elevation gain, including an uninterrupted Hors Catégorie climb of 23.1 kilometers, this is undoubtedly one of the toughest. Every hairpin turn takes you higher into a landscape that constantly changes. Olive groves give way to dense forests, forests transition to vast alpine meadows, and the sparkling blue of Lake Garda slowly disappears beneath your wheels.

This is not just a bike ride.

This is an expedition.

🗺️ The Route

From Costermano sul Garda, we roll into the day at a leisurely pace. Narrow country roads take us through Pesina, where the charming Church of San Rocco peacefully overlooks the village. It’s the ideal warm-up to find a good rhythm before the mountains take over the landscape completely.

Once we arrive in Caprino Veronese, the atmosphere changes immediately.

This is where the real challenge begins.

The road slopes upward as we climb through chestnut forests towards Spiazzi, where we turn onto the SP8dir: the classic southwestern approach to Monte Baldo. From this point, there is hardly any respite. Turn after turn, the mountain reveals its true size and takes us further up in elevation.

The climb to Rifugio Novezza is a true Hors Catégorie climb: 23.1 kilometers long, with an average gradient of 5.8% and no less than 1,379 meters of elevation gain without interruption. Yet figures tell only part of the story. Monte Baldo distinguishes itself not by merciless peak percentages, but by its endless rhythm. The slope remains notably constant and demands patience, discipline, and a perfectly paced effort from the first kilometer.

As we ascend, the landscape also changes. The olive groves slowly fade from view and give way to dense forests. Higher up, the trees open up and vast alpine meadows appear. The air becomes cooler, the silence deeper, and with each kilometer, the panoramas become more impressive.

The last kilometers via Cambrigar and Novezza are nothing short of breathtaking. Above the tree line, the road gracefully winds further towards Monte Baldo – Rifugio Bocca di Navene, the highest point of the ride.

Being here feels as though you have reached the roof of Lake Garda.

Far below, the lake sparkles between the imposing limestone cliffs, while the surrounding Alps stretch endlessly to the horizon. It’s a view that silences conversations and justifies every push on the pedals.

And then comes the reward.

The road plunges towards Brentonico, leading into one of the most beautiful descents in Northern Italy. Via the spectacular Strada Provinciale del Monte Baldo, we descend to San Valentino and Avio. Long, flowing bends, perfect asphalt, and phenomenal mountain landscapes provide pure cycling pleasure kilometer after kilometer.

Once down, the broad Adige Valley feels almost surreal after the solitude of the mountain. The fast roads invite you to pick up speed again as we pass the Church of San Valentino and San Vincenzo Ferreri, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, before moving back towards Lake Garda via Brentino Belluno, Canova, and Tagliata d’Incanal.

When Affi appears on the horizon, the finish finally comes into view. The last kilometers via Groletta and Bran require one last effort before we roll back into Costermano sul Garda with burning legs, a wide smile, and a head full of unforgettable memories.

💡 Tips for the Journey

Respect the mountain.
Monte Baldo rewards patience. Ride the first half of the climb with control and let the mountain come to you. Those who ride over their limit too early will inevitably pay the price in the last kilometers.

Eat before you get hungry.
A climb of more than an hour and a half creeps into your legs unnoticed. Keep drinking and eating regularly, even when the gradients don’t immediately invite it.

Bring an extra layer.
Even in the middle of summer, it can be surprisingly cool at the top of Monte Baldo. Combined with the long descent towards the Adige Valley, a light windbreaker is definitely not a luxury.

Take a moment for the view.
Not every ride deserves a photo stop.

Monte Baldo absolutely does.
