In 2013, the World Road Cycling Championship will take place in the historic city of Florence! It's time to explore the local circuit! See also the Routeyou group: "Tafi Andrea-StepH: Tours with StepH". The riders will start in Lucca, followed by a "line ride" east along Montecatini Terme, Lamporecchio, San Baronto, and Pistoia. After 100 km, they will then storm into Florence and begin the 10 local laps of 16.1 km each, totaling 267 km. However, those riding the route "World Championship Cycling 2013" from Pelago will first head west along the Arno to reach Florence in the shortest way. Certainly not the prettiest route, with quite a bit of traffic, but it gets you there... As soon as we cross the large railway bridge, we reach the stadium of the Fiorentina football club. Here, the epic center of the World Championship will be created, including the finish area on Viale Paoli. From here, we begin the local lap, which the riders must complete 10 times, featuring a long climb (4.8 km) and a short climb (600 m). The long climb leads towards Fiesole, the beautiful hill where many wealthy Florentines can afford a magnificent villa. Wide, well-drivable roads lead up, never super steep, but when you reach the Piazza of Fiesole, a bit of recovery is still welcome. However, there will be no time for that during the race, as it's immediately downhill! Here you can pick up speed without needing to brake too much in the wide curves. But hold back a bit, as right ahead at the traffic lights, you must go up to the right... yes, up to the right, because in this Via Salviati, the "Berendries of Florence" awaits you... And anyone who knows the Berendries in Michelbeke from the Ronde van Vlaanderen knows that such a steep climb with a "bump" can seriously test your legs! Just follow the shortest way up: straight ahead then! The descent to Florence is a relief, especially now that you can also see the dome of the cathedral in sight. A small section of the city course guides you to the Stadio Artemio Franchi... The World Championship Cycling 2013 route lets you "enjoy" the Fiesole climb once more, but also the descent to Compiobbi. Those who can't get enough can take the climb to Castello Nipozzano from Pontassieve, a detour that counts, which you definitely have to do at least once... especially if you want to become a world champion!
Result of this World Championship:
1. Rui Costa (POR)
2. Valverde (ESP)
3. Rodriguez (ESP)
