The bike race Strade Bianche captivates the imagination of cycling enthusiasts and bike fans. The unique course over the white compacted gravel, the fantastic surroundings, the beautiful city of Siena, but especially the very big names on the palmarès, have given this race an enormous status in a short period of time.
On the palmarès (or Albo d'Oro as they say in Italy) are among others Cancellara (3x), Kwiatkowski (2x), Gilbert, Benoot, and Alaphilippe.
Since 2020 also Wout Van Aert, who after 2 third places and a terrible injury, showed the entire cycling world that he was fit again!
Covering the full distance of the course (percorso) as a cycling tourist is a (too) great challenge, which is why I chose a shortened route, with the full finale of the 2020 race!
We start - for practical reasons - actually with the last 10 race kilometers so that we quickly enter the city of Siena through the centuries-old Porta di Fontebrada. The pros ride a little 100 meters further left into the Via Santa Catarina and lash their battered legs one last time on this super steep street. The traffic regulations do not allow a passage through this street by bike, but in Tuscany, more rules are sometimes broken. However, do treat yourself to a look at the (finish line at the) Piazza del Campo and the Torre del Mangia, after which you can quietly leave the city southward and head to the countryside (??).
The first stretch of sterrato to Radi used to be part of the pro course, not anymore now, but it’s a super beautiful introduction to the white, compacted earth on this Strade Bianche route. After Radi and the eastern detour to Monteroni d'Arbia, we easily find ourselves on the current pro course!
Let’s go!!
Sector 6: Radi from km 16 to km 24 length 8 km
Sector 5: San Martino in Grania from km 30.5 to km 40 length 9.5 km
Sector 4: Monte Sante Marie (sector Fabian Cancellara) from km 48 to km 59.5 length 11.5 km
Sector 3: Monteaperti from km 78 to km 78.8 length 0.8 km
Sector 2: Colle Pinzuto from km 83 to 85.4 length 2.4 km
Sector 1: Le Tolfe from km 90 to km 91.1 length 1.1 km
