The journey begins in Massarosa, a charming town in the province of Lucca, surrounded by rolling hills and olive trees. This route is a challenging ride through the Tuscan landscape and the Apuan Alps, perfect for those who enjoy long climbs and spectacular views.
From Massarosa, you first cycle towards Stiava, a small village where the first serious climb to Monte Pitoro begins. This is a gradual but tough ascent with beautiful views over the surrounding hills and Lago di Massaciuccoli. The climb serves as a nice warm-up for what lies ahead, providing a good balance between steep sections and flatter parts to catch your breath.
After descending from Monte Pitoro, you follow the road towards Gombitelli, a picturesque village known for its artisanal metalworking. Here, the challenging climb to Monte Rondinaio begins, where the landscape becomes more rugged. The road winds through dense forests and steep rock formations, revealing a new view at every turn. The climb is long and consistent, but the view from the top is absolutely worth it.
After Monte Rondinaio, you descend into the valley and pass Convalle. The road leads to the foot of the climb to Passo Sella, via the scenic village of Pescaglia. The ascent is a serious test of endurance with steep sections, but the tranquility and nature provide a unique experience. The landscape changes continuously here: you ride through dense forests, alongside fast-flowing rivers, and eventually reach the pass.
From the top of Passo Sella, a long descent to Turrite Cava follows, allowing you to build up speed as you wind through the narrow roads and sharp bends of the Apuan Alps. You pass the picturesque village of Fabbriche di Vallico, where the houses are built against the mountainsides, and time seems to stand still.
After a relaxing stretch through the valley, you arrive in Gallicano, where the next major climb to Monteperpoli begins. This climb is slightly shorter but intense, and you can already feel your legs burning after the earlier ascents. The views over the Garfagnana area, however, are breathtaking and provide enough motivation to push through.
After the climb to Monteperpoli, you descend to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, a charming medieval town where you cycle past the impressive Fortezza di Mont'Alfonso. Here begins the climb to Passo della Foce, an ascent that is longer and more demanding than the previous climbs. The landscape changes again: the forest becomes denser, and the air fresher as you gain altitude.
After reaching the summit, a technical descent follows. To your left lies the enchanting Isola Santa lake, an idyllic spot worth a brief rest. The road leads you further down, through the small villages of Terrinca and Retignano, where the mountains give way to rolling hills and forests once more.
You pass the town of Seravezza, a quiet place at the foothills of the Apuan Alps, before cycling towards Pietrasanta. Pietrasanta, known for its art and marble, offers a brief cultural stop before you continue your ride. The flat stretches along the coast make it easier after the heavy climbs, and your legs can recover here.
From Pietrasanta, you ride towards Capezzano Pianore, through agricultural land with vineyards and olive groves. The route becomes rolling, with a mix of short climbs and descents. The road to Fossa dell'Abate, near the coastline, is quick and offers opportunities to go full throttle towards the last part of the route.
The final kilometers are relatively flat and lead you back to Massarosa, where the journey ends. After this tough ride, you can enjoy the satisfaction of completing an epic route through one of the most beautiful regions of Tuscany.
Distance and Difficulty Level:
Total distance: Approximately 130 km
Difficulty level: Very hard, with several long and steep climbs interspersed with technical descents.
Conclusion:
This road cycling tour offers a perfect combination of challenging climbs, spectacular views, and varied landscapes. The climb to Monte Rondinaio and the descent along Isola Santa are highlights that will delight any cycling enthusiast. The technical nature of the route, combined with the beauty of the Tuscan and Apuan Alps, makes for an unforgettable ride.
