Kautenbach

Kautenbach is a small village nestled amidst wooded slopes, at a railway junction. Its name first appears in ancient texts around 1310 as "Kutenburch". The etymology of the place name is best expressed by the pen of Dicks - Edmond de la Fontaine, Luxembourgish writer (1823-1891): "However, Kautenbach does not carry the name of a stream, as the name seems to suggest. It is located in the corner formed by the confluence of two watercourses, the Wiltz and the Clerf." (..) Bach has the meaning of the French for curvature, bend, breast, hollowing, cavity, valley. The word Caut is Celtic for rock. These two names together, Kaut and bach, perfectly reflect the appearance of Kautenbach, a village placed in the hollow of a valley surrounded by elevated rocks(..).
