The church of Saeul is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric in Luxembourg. It was built around 1200 in the Romanesque style and belonged to the Benedictine abbeys of Echternach and Ouren. Above the sacristy is a separate space, which was likely intended for leprosy patients and others with contagious diseases. The discovery of a large number of human bones around the church seems to support that theory.
Initially, the bells hung in a small tower on the roof, but that was demolished in 1773 and a "real" tower - in Baroque style - was built onto the church. During that period, the church was also expanded to two naves. During a major renovation in 1960, the church regained its original - Romanesque - appearance. In 2010, the red tiled roof that was added at that time was replaced again with slate and copper. In appearance, the church of Saeul is related to the basilica of Echternach.
