In the oldest part, the upper town, on the left bank, stands an enormous 9th-century feudal castle. This castle fell into the hands of the House of Nassau in 1417. In 1820, it was sold for the mere sum of 3200 florins to a merchant, who removed everything of value, including the wood from the doors and windows. At that time, historic buildings hardly attracted any interest. When Victor Hugo arrived in Vianden, the castle was nothing more than a ruin. Restoration began in 1865.
