The Denzelt is a historic building located on the market square of Echternach in Luxembourg and the former Dingstuhl of the city. The name comes from the Old High German word thing, which means "assembly" or "gathering."
The exact year the building was built is not known, possibly 1236. In 1374, Abbot Wilhelm von Kerpen bought the building, which was given the name Dinstoil or Dënzelt. Citizen Johann Buschin was given the task of establishing the administration of the city of Echternach there. In 1444 it was destroyed by fire during the reign of Abbot Winand von Gluwel and rebuilt. The interior vault of the building survived the fire. Under Abbot Robert de Monreal, the tent was rebuilt in the Late Gothic/Renaissance style in 1520. In 1512, Emperor Maximilian I visited the building, the monastery and the city. After another fire in 1705, Baroque-style elements were added to the building under Abbot Benedikt Zender. In 1895/96, further changes were made to the façade according to the plans of the architect Charles Arendt. In addition to the neo-Gothic elements, statues were attached to the façade, the work of the Aachen sculptor Lambert Piedboeuf from 1896. These represent the four cardinal virtues of prudence, fortitude, temperance and justice, the Mother of God, King Solomon and Abbot Robert de Monreal on the right side as the only historical figure.
