Along the steep slope, the species-rich oak-hornbeam forest dominates the 12 km long hiking trail in Kautenbach. This mixed forest, where oak and hornbeam prevail, has been sustainably managed for centuries by being logged every 15 to 20 years. The rich biodiversity of the forest is particularly evident in the well-developed herb layer and the frequently occurring oak fern plant. The oaks used to have a special function, as their bark was used for tanning.
