We did this beautiful dream loop on 14-07-2023
Parking is available at Manternach train station. For lovers of public transport, public transport in Luxembourg is completely free.
We adapted the route - successfully - because we don't like long climbing routes. The access road is 1.4 km round trip from the station. Well set for 2.8 km. For the adaptation we used the C-promenade of Manternach.
This walk will delight the stair runners among us. We didn't count them, but estimated the steps to be from 3 to 400, spread all the way.
Have fun with this incredibly beautiful walk,
Eddy, Rita and Prinske
Traumschleifen Manternacher-fiels writes the following :
"The hike leads exclusively through the nature reserve "Manternacher Fiels". Rare plants grow in the cool, shady forest. Particularly impressive are the huge rock layer on the Michelslay and the passage through the narrow notch valley of the "Schlammbach". In between there are exceptional views and a vineyard in the middle of the forest. The nature conservation centre "A Wiewesch" is located in Manternach in a former farmhouse.
On the outskirts of the village, the path climbs over the meadows and leads past old gnarled orchards. (We took a different route, but people go that route)
Next door is the Manternacher Fiels nature reserve. A narrow path leads into the gorge forest. The location of the forest on the shady slope of the "Fielsmillen" ensures high humidity and coolness. The deadwood lies above a sea of limestone cliffs, all covered with thick layers of moss. In the Syr valley there are the remains of an old mill. The Manternacher Fiels winery is located in the middle of the forest above the old wooden mill, a little later the mighty limestone cliffs are the next destination. The rocks, overgrown with ivy, lichens and moss, rise up to 50 meters in height. Behind the Michaelslay, more than 100 stairs carved into the rock lead to the top. The next highlights are the viewpoints on the Lelliger Plateau and the hike through the deeply rugged valley of the Schlammbachtal. The valley is also known to the locals as "The Little Canyon" because the water falls wildly on rocks and wood. Later, there is an attractive descent through old wine roads, where the old steps of the vineyard walls are used for hiking. In between there are exceptional views and an old vineyard in the middle of the forest. »
