The Schumannseck was the scene of the deadliest battles of the Ardennes offensive. For several weeks, American soldiers and the German army faced each other in a deadly positional warfare. Thousands of lives were sacrificed. Here are the traces of the fighting that took place there from December 27, 1944, to January 21, 1945.

The experience trail leads through the remains still visible today, such as sniper holes, trenches, and bomb craters. Along the innovative memorial path are 65 life-sized silhouettes made based on original photos from the time of the battle. These photos were mainly taken in the Schumannseck or its surroundings. Some of these figures have been supplemented by color photographs of objects from national collections. Reconstructions of military accommodations, some in former quartzite quarries, hint at the conditions under which soldiers and civilians tried to survive the relentless fighting during the icy winter. With the help of QR codes at the trilingual information stations (FR, EN, DE), 20 thematic stations along the route can be accessed with more than 150 authentic and moving testimonies as well as new historical perspectives that can be experienced through audio and video recordings.

The route is 1.2 km (short loop) or 2.8 km (full loop) long.
