Ķemeri National Park was founded in 1997 with the aim to preserve the natural, culturally historical and culturologic values, to promote non-deteriorating economic activity, tourism and environmental education. Area of National Park is 38,165 ha. It is the third largest Latvian national park (after Gauja and Rāzna national parks). The most important values of Ķemeri National Park are wild, raised bogs, especially the Great Ķemeri moorland, very moist deciduous forests (swamp forests and quagmires), shallow coastal lakes rich with birds – the Kaņieris Lake and Sloka Lake, dunes in the seacoast, covered with ancient pine forest, and meadows – flood-land meadows, wet meadows on calcareous soils, as well as fens rich in orchids. Varied natural conditions create suitable living environment for a large number of rare and endangered plant and animal species. ĶNP provides home for such rare species of birds such as black storks, sea eagles and small eagles. Territory of National Park is an important resting place for migratory birds. In forest thickets are living wolves and lynx, can be found also smooth snake. In ancient buildings is dwelling particularly rare species of bat - the pond bat. In National Park can be found also such rare and protected plants as yellow calceolaria and shingled Gladiolus. Ķemeri National Park is distinguished from other Latvian and European areas of conservation by sulphur mineral waters what are forming under the swamps in Ķemeri surrounding and flows out in surface in Ķemeri surroundings in more than 30 springs. Healing properties of mineral waters were used for healing from the middle of 19th century. From 1838 – 1995 in Ķemeri was operating climatic and balneological resort.
