Dzilezers – Riebezers Nature Trail

Description

Dziļezers - Riebezers trail is private nature trail that runs between two very close existing elongated lakes - Riebezers Lake and Dziļezers Lake. During wetter time periods (possibly from October until April) strip of land between the lakes can be flooded, and it is possible to go along the trail only by crossing the flooded area on barefoot (or with very long boots). It is told that such a place which has to be crossed by seriously walking through the water is only one, and one more place can be crossed with normal Wellington boots. At some places at the trees the trail makers have placed informative plates with information about the wood species and its characteristics. Among better known trees such as birches, spruces, oaks, ash trees etc. can be observed also the rarer ones such as walnuts with huge leaves. In order to get on the path between the two lakes, it is possible to go along the eastern coast of Dziļezers Lake. This route will open lovely views with reflections of trees from the opposite bank in water, as well as provide opportunity to enjoy the ancient feeling of the nature – interesting, tall trees and fallen trees, rich in plant diversity. On live and fallen trees are growing various mushrooms and bracket-fungus of interesting shapes and colours. Sometimes the trees are mossy. In this side of the lake there is also a large amount of ash trees in one place what in Latvia can be observed rarely. Here the ash trees in general are very tall and their foliage is high in the air, so the ash trees have to be watched with leaned back head. In the coast of the lake at the very water there are also growing tremendously oaks with circumference of more than 3 m. Can be found also large firs and birch trees. Through the forest to Dziļezers Lake are running also four small brooks by creating in their way beautiful waterfalls over the fallen trees, branches and even tree roots. It should be kept in mind that along the eastern shore of the lake the trail only in some places, in some places you should lean through the thicket. Near the coast - 80 to 100 meters away – goes also the route what in ancient times was road. You can go along it if you do not want to go through thicket, but during the wet weather walking along the muddy road also here is not very quick and easy. Also, in this way in some places you should overcome (or lean under) the trees fallen across the road. If you want to visit the trail, you should apply to trail owners in “Priedītes” – a short distance before the lakes (to the north from the start of trail). map - http://www.daba.gov.lv/upload/Image/Turisms_Ziemelvidzeme/DT_Dzilezers_SH.gif
