Maza Jugla, Latvia

The Small Jugla is the tenth longest river in Latvia and it starts in Taurupe parish, flows through Ogre, Ikšķile, Salaspils and Stopiņi regions, in upper course it flows along the border of Garkalne and Stopiņi regions. Outlet of the Small Jugla is located 130 m above the sea level, but the mouth - 0.1 m above the sea level. Tributaries from top part reach up to 150 meters.
Small Jugla is boatable in pretty long section, starting already with the low level of flood from Tūrkalne, in high level - from Suntaži, during floods from Diedziņš. It should be kept in mind that at lower water level in sections of rapids the boats will be have to be towed.
The river at Diedziņš is already quite large, its width is about 10 m, but immediately after the bridge there is a dam (0.5 m, vertical). Further up to Suntaži there are no dams, sometimes there are small rapids. In Suntaži after the railway bridge there is a dam in height around 1.5m, almost vertical. Rodeo options are pretty good, although the bottom is shallow. Further the river becomes slow, on the banks there appear sandstone outcrops. In Tūrkalne the river has small, local rapids and remains of two dams. After Tīnuži there is only one dam around 1km above Dobelnieki (around 1.5 m high, in two levels), but it can be boatable only during floods, because the major part of the water is directed through the channel to HPP.
