Originally built in 1610 by the Jesuit Order, recently arrived in New Spain with an educational mission endorsed by the Pope, the church became a showpiece of colonial art, as the Jesuits were very succesful in their economic endeavours. The viceroy, indebted to them, expelled the order in 1767 and the church was given to another religious order, the Philippians that worshiped San Felipe Neri, the first Mexican saint.
The interior was remodeled in neoclassical style, with a lavish canopied altar by architect Tolsa. Some impressive Virgin statues can be found, as well as an extended colonial art gallery that can be visited on Saturday noon, with works by famous colonial artists such as Baltasar de Echave Orio, Miguel Cabrera and Cristobal de Villalpando.
