With the 1968 Olympics in sight and ample building space, young architect Ricardo Legorreta got carte blanche to experiment with a new hotel concept, with spectacular results.
First, Legorreta rejected towers and opted for a low-density horizontal construction. The spacious corridors connecting the building are lit by natural light, making it a pleasure to walk through them. The fountain and the lattice at the entrance are pieces of art of famous sculptors such as Mathias Goeritz, author as well of the gilded altarpiece-like frame way in the lobby. Rufino Tamayo mural got a commission to paint more than 60 square meters in shades of gray and purple, and the Oaxacan naif painter Rodolfo Morales created two more paintings. The mexican artistic "hall of fame" is completed by Pedro Coronel belongs and José Luis Covarrubias.
In the architecture and art, the influence of the great architect Luis Barragán is omnipresent. His elegant and humane vision on buildings is based on flat walls, the use of water bodies, strong color and special light effects.
Although the subsequent renovations have not always respected with all the colors and original artwork, it certainly remains a special experience to walk around the hotel. As an excuse to do this, you can visit he Blue Lounge, a bar with appropriate design for this hotel and ode to modernity.
