The ruins of Tulum are the best preserved remains of the last stage of the Maya civilization (called Postclassc, after the tenth century), when the commercial ports replaced the ancient Mayan cities and old trade routes of the interior of the peninsula. The cultural and religious heritage of Chichen Itza and Mayapan is obvious, given the importance of the cult of Kukulcan (Venus-Quetzalcoatl).
If the architecture is not as refined as in the older cities, the attraction of the main estructures like the Castle, the Temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God is the spectacular setting on a cliff above the white sand and blue-green water of the Carribean. The Castle may have had a double function as a temple and a lighthouse, to steer the canoes through the opening in the coral reef in front.
