This city is again a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because of its beautiful historic centre with many churches (the Basílica with the Virgin of Solitude, the Cathedral, Santo Domingo), theatres (like Macedonio Alcalá) and museums (of popular and modern art). But above all Oaxaca is a place of lively traditions: many artist painters create and make their living here, many housewives and market cooks make excellent dishes with a strong indigenous influence (there are even cooking schools for foreigners).
The surrounding valleys contain many interesting indigenous villages, and stunning landscapes.
