New Church

Description

The name "Nieuwe Kerk" dates back to the fifteenth century and was used in popular parlance to distinguish it from 'De Oude Kerk'.

At that time, the city was expanding rapidly, and this church on the 'old side' of the Damrak could no longer accommodate the growing stream of churchgoers. The construction of a second parish church on the 'new side' of the city became a necessity. A prominent citizen, Willem Eggert, donated his orchard as building land, and in 1408 the new house of worship received episcopal approval 'due to the heavy overload of the pastoral care of the existing church...'

A year later, De Nieuwe Kerk was consecrated and shortly thereafter put into use. The church fell prey to fierce fires three times. In the winter of 1645, it was hit the hardest; the roof disappeared in the sea of flames, and the building looked like a ruin. It was restored during the subsequent centuries.

Today, the church serves as an exhibition space. Through its active exhibition policy, De Nieuwe Kerk has become the example of a successful repurposing of a historical building that has lost its original function. The building also hosts musical activities. The two magnificent organs make the church the ideal location for organ and choir concerts. Famous organists regularly play the historic organs. The Christmas and New Year's concerts have now become an annual recurring event, well attended by a loyal audience.

By organizing lectures, events, and concerts, the church is fully involved in community life. De Nieuwe Kerk is currently one of the most visited locations in the country.
