The only remaining windmill complex in operation in Europe, the Molenviergang in Aarlanderveen, is situated between Zwammerdam - Alphen aan den Rijn and Aarlanderveen. The polder mills are interconnected and bridge the height difference between the drainage and polder water. Each mill pumps the excess polder water slightly higher, allowing the upper mill to ultimately drain it into the Oude Rijn. The mills are of the "Bovenkruier" type, with a wingspan of 27 meters.
