The Vinkeveense Plassen were created by peat extraction. This started relatively late here. In other areas, peat was already being harvested since the Golden Age, but here only in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Peat workers used nets on poles to scoop sludge from the waterbed, dumped the sludge into flat boats, and then deposited it on elongated islands between the water, the laying fields. After the sludge had drained, it was further stamped down and cut into blocks. These blocks were piled up to dry further. In the video, you can see how the peat workers used to do this. https://youtu.be/IpwifqPvoGQ. Later, the dredging was done with machines.
