In 1598, dike workers from Lekkerkerk and Kinderdijk started the diking here. An irregular troop of more than three thousand workers were deposited on the deserted part of Zeeland in a few weeks and went to work with wood for decking, poles, shovels and wheelbarrows. The best workers, proofers, surveyors and schexecutors started building huts. The disaster of 5 November 1530, in which Zeeland was destroyed, was never to happen again. The dikes, dams and bridges may be numerous, but the charm of vast waters, picturesque villages with their own atmosphere have remained happy. A part of the Netherlands full of potatoes and sugar beets, where space and freedom must be honoured.
