Description

The Slotermeer is located between the three towns of Sloten, Balk and Woudsend. Three waterways bridled with barrels connect these places. The lake is sometimes only 1.20 metres deep outside the channels. On the east side, next to the fairway, the water depth is approximately 1 meter.

In the Elfstedentocht, the route crosses the Slotermeer twice, once from IJlst to Sloten and once from Sloten to Stavoren. The lake is often a bottleneck in the route: it freezes over relatively late and both kluning and ice transplantation is impossible. So, one has to wait for the ice to grow naturally.
