Dolmens or dolmen is a megalithic stone chamber from prehistoric times consisting of standing supporting stones, covered by flat capstones. The structure consists of upright large stones ("columns" or "supporting stones") on which flat capstones rest. Usually, the supporting stones are largely on parallel lines. Many small boulders (in the Netherlands often bifurcated boulders) once filled the gaps, but these have generally disappeared, as well as the cover mound of earth and/or turf. An entrance to dolmens is usually on the south side of the stone room. In the Netherlands, erratic stones were used as building material, in other countries the local stone (in Belgium, for example, pudding stone). On the German island of Sylt, the dolmen Denghoog was carefully covered with clay and flat stones, with sand and earth over it, so that the chamber was still completely intact and dry at the time of the excavation in 1868, about 5000 years after its last use.
