In its oldest form, the castle was a motte with a wooden tower surrounded by moats and wooden walls. Here they could retreat in case of imminent danger. The castle has a turbulent history. Because of its location in a marshland area on transit routes, especially those between the Hanseatic cities of Münster and Groningen, and because of the lucrative toll rights, the fortress was of great strategic importance. Its possession changed many times, which was often accompanied by violence. The castle was used in the Battle of Ane in 1227 and in the Siege of Coevorden. The castle was looted, destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1402, Bishop Frederick of Blankenheim rebuilt the castle.
