History resulted in a modern museum in one of the most beautiful places in the Netherlands. Between hills and forests, the past has been brought to life in the Liberation Museum, southeast of Nijmegen and Arnhem. In the museum you will experience the run-up to the war, experience the occupation period, celebrate the Liberation and see the reconstruction of the Netherlands and Europe. Through scents, interactive presentations, dioramas, models, original films and sound fragments, the liberation is depicted in a fascinating way. The museum shows young and old the current meaning of democracy, freedom and human rights.
On Sunday 17 September 1944, Market Garden marks the start of an exciting period for Nijmegen. The operation brings liberation from the German yoke but at the same time the city is on the front line. This front period cost the city more civilian casualties and buildings than the 'mistaken bombing' of February 1944. Although Market Garden is often wrongly known to the general public as the Battle of Arnhem, according to many historians, the events in and around Nijmegen determined the fate of this doomed airborne operation. The extent of the battle and especially how hotly contested the possession of their city once was, is also not known to all Nijmegen residents.
The Liberation Museum offers, led by two guides, the possibility of a battlefield tour by bicycle 'The liberation of Nijmegen', which adjusts the current image of the battle for the city.
