It was here in this hortus botanicus in Leiden that the German physician and botanist Philipp Franz von Siebold planted the Japanese knotweed. In 1822 he went to Batavia as a surgeon major of the Dutch army and brought the Fallopia japonica with him. It is the most aggressive plant that we now have to fight in our region. Around 1841 the plant started its unstoppable rampage throughout the European continent fom Leiden.
