The castle of Leiden is one of the oldest surviving examples of a castle in the Netherlands. The building is located at the point where the two branches of the Rhine converge. The round structure is situated on a motte, an artificial hill. Archaeological research has shown that there was already a wooden building on this site around the year 1000. In the eleventh century, the hill was raised several times to about 9 meters above the surrounding area.
