The Zijlpoort is build in 1667 - 1669. It's one of two still remaining city gates. The gate is designed and build by architect Willem van der Helm. The gate is build in the form of a parallelogram, which required special bricks for the corners. The clock tower was only decided to build during the building of the gate. The sculptures were made by Rombout Verhulst.
During the last renovation in the 90's parts of the city wall have been put on each side of the gate again. In one of those a restaurant is located nowadays.
The gate is a monument.
