Rhijnestein is located in an idyllic spot, near the old village center of Cothen, just on the other side of the Kromme Rijn. The Rhine used to be the border between the Roman Empire and the area of Germanic tribes.
Rhijnestein is a former knight's court town on a rectangular moat site. The complex consists of a medieval residential tower with a 19th century symmetrical extension. The characteristic gatehouse originates from the 14th century.
The beech avenue over the estate is the old road from Utrecht to Wijk bij Duurstede. The park forest and garden (not accessible) are laid out in English landscape style. The vegetable garden is used as an allotment for residents of Cothen. On the estate there are several stinzen plants and there are standard orchards with cherries and old apple and pear varieties.
The house is still inhabited by descendants of lords and also of a lady of Rhijnestein.
