At the end of the 15th century, the sea dyke of Schouwen was still over 3 kilometers further in the Oosterschelde. Between 1475 and 1650, more than 3,500 hectares of fertile polder land with 14 prosperous villages were lost in this Southland due to dike breaches and dike collapses. The Plompe Toren was the center of the village of Koudekerke hundreds of years ago. Koudekerke was almost completely excluded from the dikes between 1550 and 1600. The houses were demolished, and because a church without people has no use, the church met the same fate. Only the church tower remained standing as a beacon for the busy shipping traffic on the Oosterschelde.
The tower is now a visitor center, set up by the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. From the open platform on the roof of the tower without a spire, visitors have a magnificent view.
