The Koorkerk is a part of the former abbey of Middelburg. The church is so called because it consists of the choir of the abbey church; the rest of the church forms the Nieuwe Kerk. Until the Reformation, the church was reserved for monks and the Nieuwe Kerk for parishioners.
The single-nave church dates from the beginning of the fourteenth century, but the north wall still contains remains from the thirteenth century. It is a simple church built in the style of Flemish brick Gothic. The interior of the church is remarkably sober, but particularly light due to the high windows. In one of the wall niches the Roman King William II is probably buried.
