The monastery of Middelburg was already mentioned in 1123. It was a daughter monastery of the canons from Voormezele, near Ypres. The abbey churches are the 14th-century Choir Church and the 15th-century New Church. Count William II, the father of Floris V, is presumably buried in the Choir Church.
