Legend has it that Hulsterloo was founded after a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary was found. In any case, there was a chapel, as well as a few farms, and peat extraction was carried out. The region was mainly depopulated during the turbulent 16th century, although it had been going downhill even before that. However, Hulsterloo is explicitly mentioned in the Reynaert epic. According to the fox, the 'treasure of Kriekeputte' is not far from the chapel of Hulsterloo. Treasure hunters beware: the chapel was demolished in the 16th century. Nowadays, Hulsterloo no longer exists and you can find the Dutch municipality of Nieuw-Namen here, as well as the border municipality of Kieldrecht.
