This area used to be located in a stream valley. Storms blow sand into the valley. The water collects in fens and peat is formed. In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants began to excavate the peat. This is how the Molenven between Saasveld and Hertme near Borne is created. Nature is now forming peat bogs again. The water is calcareous, which means that special plants such as the water violet bloom there.
Scientists learn applications for modern forestry by following developments in the Molenven. Birds of prey nest in this nature reserve because of the tranquility. Woodpeckers love the dead wood that they can easily nestle in.
On the corner of Gravenallee and Bornestraat, a bird-watching screen has been placed to watch birds on the fen unseen
