The rampart around Muiden was constructed in 1577 and served to enclose the (former) Sea Dyke and the canal from Naarden. Between 1877 and 1879, the fortress of Muiden was modernized with the well-known Muiderslot by its inclusion in the Defense Line of Amsterdam. See also www.muiderslot.nl
The Muiderslot is a medieval castle. And not just any castle. The Muiderslot is a water castle, surrounded by water. In this case, it is a moat that was constructed by humans. It is one of the oldest structures you see today, dating back to the late 13th century. The lord who built it initially used it as a kind of toll house, as he required passing ships to pay tolls.
Muiden protected the city of Amsterdam and was part of the water defense lines. This is all partly thanks to this castle. It has a special sluice that allows it to flood the polders behind it. Since the French period, the castle has not been inhabited. The French army used it as a barracks. Afterwards, it became a storage place for the Ministry of War. Around 1870, two bomb-proof shelters were added. These housed the troops, specifically the 'married soldiers'.
At the end of the 19th century, restoration began, and the Muiderslot was recognized as a National Museum. This medieval castle is the oldest and most famous castle in the Netherlands. The Muiderslot is definitely worth a visit if you have some time.
On the castle grounds, there is also the multimedia presentation 'Waterschild'. You discover what the Muiderslot has meant in terms of water management and how water has been both friend and foe to the region throughout the centuries. Will you drop by?
