P.C. Hooft regularly holds meetings at muiderslot. Friends were invited to sing, make music and discuss literature and art. Hooft and his second wife, Leonora Hellemans, became the centre of a select circle of friends who, as the so-called 'Muiderkring', had long been a defining figure of literary life in the seventeenth century. And although it has now become clear that literary life at that time encompassed much more than just the summer meetings in Muiden, it remains that Hooft played a central role in Dutch literature of the Golden Age. Pieter Cornelisz Hooft was born in Amsterdam in 1581. In 1609 Hooft was appointed drost of Muiden and bailiff of Naarden and Gooiland.
