The Markermeer is known by the various names Hoornsche Polder or Southern IJsselmeer. The lake, with an area of no less than 700 km², is located between Noord-Holland, Flevoland, and the Northern IJsselmeer. The lake is 2 to 4 meters deep in most places and is named after the peninsula Marken, in the southwest of the lake. The term Markermeer stems from the planned reclamation of this area to create Markerwaard. Since that plan is off the table, the term Southern IJsselmeer is actually more accurate. Both the northern and southern parts are remnants of the former Zuiderzee and historically and geographically form a unity. The Markermeer transitions to the IJmeer in the south and to the (Northern) IJsselmeer in the north.
