Description

Voorwijk is a monumental mansion in the Drenthe town of De Wijk in the municipality of De Wolden. Since its construction, the house has almost always been inhabited by members of the Tonckens and De Vos van Steenwijk families.
Voorwijk was built in 1791 by the patriot and lawyer Wyncko Tonckens. He financed the construction from an inheritance obtained from his uncle Warmolt Lunsingh, steward of Dickninge. After his death and that of his wife Maria Vos, their five minor children lived in the house with their aunt Willemtje Vos. At the mutual division of the estate in 1817, Voorwijk came to daughter Rolina Tonckens. After her death, her eldest brother Warmold Lunsingh Tonckens bought the Voorwijk house from her estate and rented it to his aunt Willemtje Vos and her husband Jan Diderik van den Bosch. In 1843 Voorwijk was leased to Reint Hendrik de Vos van Steenwijk.
