At the Kamperzeedijk, you can see the former steam pumping station Lutterzijl. The Kamperzeedijk dates back to before the fourteenth century and is one of the oldest sea defenses in the Netherlands. The dike marks the border with the Kampereiland, which was regularly flooded by the Zuiderzee and provided protection to the inhabitants of the Mastenbroek polder. The basins you pass are the result of earlier dike breaches. The Kamperzeedijk has been plagued by multiple floods in the past. One of the most severe floods was the flood disaster of February 4 and 5, 1825. The Kamperzeedijk collapsed in several places and the polder was completely flooded during this storm surge.
