Old landscape formed during the last ice age by impermeable clay and gravel layers over which blown sand (cover sand) from the dry North Sea has been deposited.
It was only in the 19th century that this landscape was reclaimed through newly developed forestry methods and the establishment of the Heidemij for this purpose.
