The Zandkreekdam is a closure dam in the Zandkreek between Kats on Noord-Beveland and Wilhelminadorp on Zuid-Beveland on the Oosterschelde side of the Veerse Meer. The Zandkreekdam is 830 meters long and is the second structure of the Delta Works.
The construction of the Zandkreekdam was part of the Three Islands Plan developed from the 1930s to connect Walcheren and Noord- and Zuid-Beveland. After the Watersnood disaster of 1953, that plan was incorporated into the Delta Works. The Three Islands Plan was implemented as the first component. In the original Delta Plan, the Zandkreekdam was not deemed necessary in the final situation. The dam would have had a water basin closed off from the North Sea on two sides. The phased execution of the Delta Works made the dam necessary: with a closed Veerse Gat and an open Oosterschelde, the tidal currents would have eroded the zandkreek far beyond the existing boundaries in a very short time. By placing a dam at the location of the wantij, where the flood current through the Veerse Gat approximately meets the Oosterschelde, this is prevented. Similar considerations led to the construction of the Grevelingendam and the Volkerakdam.
