Roman and medieval riches
One of the oldest places in the Zwin region (and even in the Netherlands and Flanders) is Aardenburg. It has been around for almost 2,000 years. A large amount of Roman and medieval objects have been found in the soil of Aardenburg. Curious about life back then? Then go to the Municipal Archaeological Museum.
Aardenburg is a Roman-imperial foundation. There was a large fort for 1,000 soldiers and a village. The museum shows the daily life of these soldiers and civilians through various Roman characters: a soldier, a merchant family (father, mother, son, slave) and a priest. They show you the story behind the many excavated objects: how they lived, what they ate and drank, which gods and goddesses they believed in, and how they protected themselves from the evil eye.
In the Middle Ages, Aardenburg was a bustling and noisy Flemish port city. In the museum you will meet a number of striking people from that time: a skipper, an innkeeper family (and their dog), a pilgrim and a priest. You can view the objects they used. For example, you will find out what misfires are. For which bird whistles were used. How old piggy banks are. And what does a fire-breathing dragon do in the museum?
You can not only listen and watch, but also experience their activities. For example, a Roman board game or medieval dice.
