The Park is the oldest park in Rotterdam after the Oude Plantage, located to the west of the city center. The Park is situated between the Nieuwe Maas, the Parkhaven, the Westzeedijk, and the Scheepvaartkwartier.
The area on which the Park now lies was secretly purchased in 1851 by the municipality of Rotterdam with the intention of establishing a slaughterhouse here. After objections from Delfshaven regarding this and at the request of the council, the municipality of Rotterdam decided in 1852 to create a "public walk" here.
