The Bartolotti House was built in 1617 for Guillelmo Bartolotti (Willem van den Heuvel), one of the richest Amsterdammers of that time. The inscription on Bartolotti's house explains how he acquired his wealth: there are two cartouches placed with the painted inscription on the left "Ingenio et Assiduo Labore" (by ingenuity and diligent work) and on the right "Religione et Probitate" (by religion and integrity).
The design is attributed to Hendrick de Keyser, the execution to his son Pieter.
