“The skippers of the VOC must have gotten quite bored from time to time,” says the curator of the Bottle Ship Museum, where around 750 bottle ships can be seen. “Sometimes the skippers had to wait for days for a breath of wind to sail on. To pass the time, they would squeeze tiny ships through the neck of their previously emptied bottle. Once ‘inside,’ they would raise the mast, and their bottle ship was ready.”
