Fort Vijfhuizen has been beautifully renovated and is used for exhibitions. It is part of 'The Defense Line of Amsterdam', a 19th-century defense line of forts and waterworks around the capital.
The defense focused on attacks from outside this line. For this fort, that means the west. You can also see this well in the asymmetrical structure of the fort.
