The forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam were situated at places where the waterline is crossed by dikes, roads, or railway lines. In these places, the advancing enemy would not be stopped by the water, so that he had to be able to be fired upon in these places. In military jargon, these roads etc. were known as accesses.
